Hail Damage in Tyler: How to Inspect Your Roof and File a Claim

What to do after a hailstorm in Tyler, Texas: checking for damage safely, documenting it, working with your insurer and choosing a roofer.

Look from the ground first

Do not climb on a wet or damaged roof. From the ground, look for dented gutters, downspouts, window screens, vents and AC fins. Check where downspouts empty for piles of shingle granules. Inside, look for new stains on ceilings and in the attic.

Document the storm and the damage

Write down the date and time of the storm and take photos of hail on the ground if you can, with a coin for scale. Photograph every dent and stain you find. Keep receipts for tarps or emergency repairs, since those are often reimbursable.

Call your insurer and read your policy

Every policy sets its own deadline and deductible, and many Texas policies use a percentage wind and hail deductible. Report the claim promptly and ask what the adjuster will need. You can have a roofer present during the adjuster's inspection.

Be careful with storm chasers

After big hail events, crews from out of town knock on doors across Smith County. Ask for a local address and references, check for RCAT licensing and insurance, and do not sign anything that hands your claim over to the contractor without understanding it. Texas does not license roofers, so the vetting is up to you.

Permits and the final job

A full replacement in Tyler requires a city permit, submitted through TylerInspections.com. Make sure your contract lists the shingle line, underlayment, flashing, how rotten decking will be priced, and cleanup, including a magnetic sweep for nails. Pay the final amount only after the work passes and you have seen the finished roof.
